The ESL Program provides a supportive learning setting for non-native speakers of English who need to improve language and cultural competencies for success in U.S. higher education. Each year the program welcomes students from around the world.
ESL students enroll in general English, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Special Purposes (ESP) classes at several skill levels. Depending on language test results, they study in either intensive or semi-intensive programs.
The program serves students at all levels of study---graduate degree, undergraduate degree and ESL only (non-degree). The program assists students who
- are accepted to an academic degree program at Duquesne University, but whose English still requires some improvement
- are planning to enroll in or are conditionally accepted to other universities after completing the ESL Program at Duquesne University, or
- are interested in studying only ESL as non-degree students on either a short- or long-term basis.
The program awards academic credit to Duquesne University undergraduate degree program students who successfully complete ESL classes. Each semester qualified students may also earn Certificates of Program Completion, Highest Honors, and Commendation.
Established in 1987, the Duquesne University ESL Program is fully accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).
